Welcome to PHEA Sports.

Parkland Home Educators Association runs a physical education program for home educated children in the area.

The program runs for approximately 30 weeks starting in September and running to the first week in December, then starting up again in January and running until the beginning of May.  The program runs Tuesday evenings at two gyms for four levels.

PHEA Sports is fortunate to have two facilities to work with through the Town of Stony Plain, as most user groups are only allowed one gym.  We have developed a good working relationship with the custodians of the schools and have been diligent in the last few years to follow the school rules.  The guidelines set out by the PHEA sports program work in conjunction with the schools requests and are essential for the success of the program.  It continues to be important to maintain our good working relationship with the Town of Stony Plain and the schools.

There are 4 levels based primarily on age.  At all levels, the students are encouraged to learn sportsmanship and good character while enjoying the many sports to which they are introduced.  The younger levels are taught skills through play and some drills and modified versions of the sports they will play in higher levels.  The older students are exposed to the sports they would be participating in through a regular school program plus some extras.  In all levels the attitude of the students is most important.  We strive to run a program that is fun and builds skills in physical education as well as in character.   A report card at the end of the season will reflect your child’s accomplishments and successes.

This year we have some new people working on the program.  Janice did an awesome job at organizing things, so it is easier for those who follow.  Through her leadership and hard work, and the hard work of Laura and Jaime, the program has grown and developed.  I thank them for making my job easier.  As the sports coordinator, I will oversee the program.  There are two administrators as well; Carie Bedard, for levels 2 and 3, and Helena Thomson for levels 4 and 5.  These two ladies will oversee the program at the gym level.  Of course I will be around too, but will rely on their skills to take care of things.

A new schedule for the year will be up shortly.  Until then, you can check out last year’s schedule to give you an idea of the sports the children will be participating in and the general time frame.

For those of you who are coming back to the program, welcome back, and welcome to the newcomers who will be joining us this year.

Sincerely,

Dawn Sirdar

PHEA Sports Coordinator
